Notary Public Service

The Buena Vista Public Library offers free notary services.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING
Customers seeking notarizations must bring:
- Unsigned, completed documents to be notarized.
- Originals of any documents to be copied and notarized.
- Notaries can only notarize certified copies made by library staff.
- Valid photo identification.
- Photo IDs must be current and in a language the notary understands. If an ID is not familiar to the notary, the notary has the option to refuse acceptance.
- Any witnesses (18+) required. Library staff are not guaranteed to serve as witnesses. Customers are not allowed to ask other library patrons to serve as their witnesses.
- In order to serve as a witness, the witness must be personally known to the individual whose documents are being notarized.
- All witnesses must bring valid photo identification as described above.
LIBRARY NOTARY GUIDELINES
In addition to the rules and regulations that govern notaries, the following guidelines are in place:
- Proper identification, in the form of a current government issued photo ID, must be provided. Some examples are: driver’s license, passport, military ID card, or resident alien card.
- If required, customers must provide their own witness(es). Library patrons and staff are not available as witnesses.
- Notary will keep a record of all names using this service. (Notary service is not protected under Library privacy laws.)
- Notary has the final decision as to which documents will be notarized. Notary has the right to refuse to notarize documents if there appears to be any irregularities.
- Do not sign the document until you are before the notary.
- Notary does not give legal advice or legal references.
