The Buena Vista Public Library offers free notary services.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

Customers seeking notarizations must bring:

  1. Unsigned, completed documents to be notarized.
  2. Originals of any documents to be copied and notarized.
  3. Notaries can only notarize certified copies made by library staff.
  4. Valid photo identification.
  5. Photo IDs must be current and in a language the notary understands. If an ID is not familiar to the notary, the notary has the option to refuse acceptance.
  6. Any witnesses (18+) required. Library staff are not guaranteed to serve as witnesses. Customers are not allowed to ask other library patrons to serve as their witnesses.
  7. In order to serve as a witness, the witness must be personally known to the individual whose documents are being notarized.
  8. All witnesses must bring valid photo identification as described above.

LIBRARY NOTARY GUIDELINES

In addition to the rules and regulations that govern notaries, the following guidelines are in place:

  • Proper identification, in the form of a current government issued photo ID, must be provided. Some examples are: driver’s license, passport, military ID card, or resident alien card.
  • If required, customers must provide their own witness(es). Library patrons and staff are not available as witnesses.
  • Notary will keep a record of all names using this service. (Notary service is not protected under Library privacy laws.)
  • Notary has the final decision as to which documents will be notarized. Notary has the right to refuse to notarize documents if there appears to be any irregularities.
  • Do not sign the document until you are before the notary.
  • Notary does not give legal advice or legal references.
